A survey of changes in literary styles, of the struggle between the baroque and the classical ideals in art, and of the crisis in European thought that brought about the rise of the espirit philosophique. The theatre of Corneille, Moliere, and Racine, and the philosophical works of Descartes, Pascal, Montesquieu, Voltaire, Diderot, and Rousseau. Three hours of lecture.
