The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program is a 60-credit hour program designed for the individual who seeks a professional counseling career in rehabilitation settings. The mission is to educate and train students at the master’s level to meet qualified personnel needs of the profession of rehabilitation. The program is designed to prepare culturally competent counselors who specialize in working with individuals with physical, developmental, cognitive, psychological, and neurological disabilities and/or illnesses. Students will be equipped with knowledge, skills, and experiences to empower people with disabilities through the counseling process.
The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program will have the following objectives:
- To increase the student’s knowledge of the role and function of rehabilitation counselors
- To enhance the student’s knowledge of the needs and associated resources to meet the evolving needs of individuals with disabilities
- To prepare students to obtain professional licensure and certification in the profession of rehabilitation counseling
- To prepare students to address professional issues in rehabilitation counseling through professional associations,
- publications, and professional development
- To prepare students to work in a variety of public and private settings in the rehabilitation counseling profession
The Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program will have the following student learning outcomes:
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of the history and philosophy of rehabilitation counseling.
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of effective rehabilitation counseling practices with individuals and groups.
- Program graduates will effectively apply rehabilitation case management strategies.
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of vocational development within the rehabilitation counseling profession.
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of job development and placement strategies.
- Program graduates will effectively analyze rehabilitation research.
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of ethical practices within the profession of rehabilitation counseling.
- Program graduates will demonstrate knowledge of the rehabilitation delivery systems.
The 60-credit hour Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling Program will be comprised of 20 required courses. No new courses will be offered. The proposed curriculum is comprised of 48 hours of coursework offered by the Counseling Program and 12 hours of coursework which are offered in the Rehabilitation Counseling Concentration.
