LSU Shreveport 2022-23 catalog

A Message from the Chancellor

On behalf of the faculty and staff, welcome to LSU Shreveport.

While this catalog serves as a comprehensive resource of university information for students, faculty, staff, and supporters, it merely scratches the surface of the full breadth of the LSUS experience, especially for many of our alumni who have not been to campus in a number of years. Over the last decade LSUS has undergone a significant evolution. We have spent millions of dollars modernizing our campus, doing pioneering work in online learning, and developing and providing services that meet and exceed the needs of the 21st-century student. We are, as ever, committed to providing every one of our almost 10,000 students the tools they need to succeed, whether it’s here at LSUS, or after they graduate and enter the next phase of their lives.

Our Student Success Center plays a major role in enhancing the academic development of both our traditional and online students, offering 24-hour access to tutoring, as well as academic and career counseling services. Our 10,000 square feet Cyber Collaboratory, where students can work with cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security, Fabrication, and Robotics, has become a major research hub for the region. The ‘Collab’ goes hand-in-hand with our Idea Space, which was designed using the Stanford Design Thinking model of problem-solving, a coveted methodology across academic, corporate, and government landscapes. The Human Performance Lab, which offers athletic and occupational physical testing services to professional organizations and the community, is a hub for novel and innovative research in exercise and occupational physiology, biomechanics, and motor behavior. In short, LSUS continues to evolve in the way we design and deliver educational offerings to our students, with an outcome-based focus on digital dexterity and emerging technologies.

In addition to maintaining the high academic standards of the University, LSUS students, faculty, staff, and alumni continue to make an impact both at home and abroad. Our faculty are engaged in internationally-recognized research projects, often involving our undergraduate students, a rarity for a university of our size. The LSUS Museum of Life Sciences provided 18,441 Mollusk records for a Smithsonian Museum of Natural History project. Our students won multiple awards at prestigious academic competitions last year, including at the 20th Annual Louisiana Biomedical Research Network Meeting, and the 7th Annual International Market Study Competition. Our athletics teams were successful on the field of play in the RRAC conference and on the national stage in the NAIA while maintaining excellence in the classroom, earning a cumulative GPA of 3.03. Our men’s basketball team earned an NAIA National Tournament berth, while our #4 ranked baseball team earned their second successive NAIA College World Series berth. Sylvia Hoffman, a former Lady Pilot basketball player and weightlifting team member, earned a Bronze medal at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in the two-person bobsled event.

All of these successes would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the wider LSUS family, including support from the LSUS Foundation and the LSUS Alumni Association. Their contributions provide lift to our community through scholarships, networking and mentorship opportunities, special events, and much more. LSUS persists in growing its influence in Northwest Louisiana, by fostering partnerships with key strategic organizations such as Barksdale Global Strike Command, North Louisiana Economic Partnership, LSU Health Shreveport, and the City of Shreveport to create new opportunities for our students and strengthen our region overall.

In your time at LSUS I encourage you to: commit to lifelong learning from your first year as a student at LSU Shreveport; create a personal game plan for how you will pilot your dreams for the ever-changing worlds of graduate school and career; get involved in student clubs or organizations, especially ones related to your future academic major and/or career; and leverage the strengths of our excellent faculty, high-quality academic programs, and our university location to secure and achieve a valuable internship opportunity. Don’t just be a Pilot; be the best Pilot that you can be!
